Case Study: Dry-Stack Stone Retaining Wall Rebuild

        Before and After

The Assignment:
Take down two portions of a bulging stone wall
Install drainage, rebuild a straight wall.

Before we begin.
The upper bulge.
Natural stones, dry-stacked.

Setting Up
With a tarp on the nearby driveway, planks to slide stones on.

Dismantling the wall
Heavy stones, shovels and pry bars, planks, move stones from wall to tarp.

Not stacked anymore...
Many hours of labour and the stones are removed.
Upper bulge dismantled
A few stones remain to be moved, with the majority put aside.
The lower bulge, removed
Another angle, with earth now to be removed.
Some of the earth will be replaced with gravel, a drainage pipe.
Digging to create footing space
The earth has clay in it, which sticks to the shovel.
First row of stones, & weeping tile installed
The bottom row of face stones are installed.
A drainage pipe buried in gravel behind the face stones.
Premium landscaping cloth, 6' wide, envelopes the gravel and drain pipe..
The work site, rebuilding.
Tarps for cleanliness, wood for walkways.
The lower wall done
Flat stones surface the top, as cap stones.
Long stones pierce back into the second layer of stones behind the face.
The wall leans back, with each row's stones supported by stone behind and below.
