    Case Study: Stone Step Rebuild

        Before and After

    The Assignment:
Remove the stones, repair the base.
Rebuild the steps, replace broken stones, parge sides.

Repairs had failed
Over the years, crack repairs had been made, but not a complete rebuild.

Demolition
Removing the stones carefully.
We place all the stones in order nearby on a tarp.
This gives us a chance to repair the base.

Keeping track of the stones
Keeping the site clean, with a tarp to lay stones on.

Repairing the base
A high-bond S-type masonry cement is used.
S-type type is three times stronger than N-type.
S-type is also helpful with gardens on both sides.
Now the stair is left to harden for three days.

Dry-fitting the stones
Here we see where one of the stones needed replacement.
Custom shaping a stone
Stone chisel, mallet, stone hammer.
Scoring a line, snapping the stone.
Completed, parged on the sides
We've done the three steps, parged both sides. Removed the tarps, cleaned up, and caulked where it meets the house.
