    Window's Lintel Installation, Brick Replacement

        Before and After

The Assignment:
    The window company removed bricks.
But did not install a lintel, or replace the brick.
My job: install lintel, replace brick.
Avoid collapsing the wall, and window damage.

Scaffolding
Here is the new window, and the supports left by the window crew.
The absence of a lintel meant they needed wood supports.
But the supports are in the way of putting in a lintel.
And the brick above the window is cracked, wanting to drop.

New Supports for the Brick
4x4 beams on either side, and clamps in the middle.
Now I have an opening to put in the lintel.

Clamps Hold the Brick Up
The wood supports are no longer blocking the lintel's installation.

Lintel In, Bricks Started
The steel lintel now spans the window.

The first rows of bricks are being set.

Cracks to be Repaired
Beyond replacing missing brick, there are cracks above.

Old-Fashioned Brick Ties
Simple nails set into the mortar, hold the bricks to the wall.

They used to be hand-made nails, so these nearly 100 year old nails are rather good.

Brick Tie Evolution
The rusted brick tie is illegal, as of July 2014.
The new brick tie, with a bend in it, is the new standard.
Old Bricks, New Bricks
You can see the interior colour is the same.
Without holes, these had basins that held the cement.

Half Done
The right side now meets the upper bricks.

It is given a day to set and cure before holding the weight as we will remove the other supports next.

Following the Cracks
Having replaced the missing brick, we are now removing more brick to reset the bricks, fixing the upper cracks.
Done
We could use soot to dirty the new brick, to darken it a bit.
